Why we built a more reliable access control system.

It started with a holiday call no operator wants.

I didn't plan on starting a smart-lock company. I had enough going on already. But after a few years of fighting with access-control systems that failed at the worst possible times, it became clear: nobody was going to fix this problem for me.

If you've ever been in the middle of a holiday dinner and suddenly found yourself taking a call from a tenant who can't get into their unit because the gate locked them out, you know exactly the frustration I'm talking about. Not theoretical frustration — the real kind. The kind that sits in your stomach and makes you wonder why a system built for access can't reliably provide access.

For years I gave the company I was using the benefit of the doubt. I listened to the promises. I installed every update. I tried every workaround. And still, batteries died without warning, systems froze, doors didn't open, and I was left holding the bag when tenants were locked out and revenue was interrupted. Somewhere in there, the question changed: why was I still expecting them to fix this?

The moment the solution became obvious.

One day I was on the phone with the president of that company, hearing the same lines about how "reliable" their product was — while I had real customers standing outside a unit, trying to get in. As I'm having this conversation, Jesse Duncan walks by. Jesse co-founded a company that builds automation and IoT hardware for the oil & gas sector — an environment where equipment simply cannot fail. He overheard enough of the call to know exactly what was happening.

That was the spark. And we started asking the real question: if access control is so critical to a storage facility, why is the bar so low?

When technology fails, operators pay the price.

Every operator knows the feeling. You invest in technology to make your life easier, but instead it interrupts dinners, ruins holidays, and turns tenants into tech-support agents. Nothing makes my blood boil like technology that pretends to be smart and then locks out a paying customer.

So I didn't just want reliability — I wanted capability. A system that moves the needle on operations and revenue, and at the end of the day just opens the door when you tell it to.
