The Story Behind BluLok
In the world of remotely managed self-storage, reliability is everything.
As one of the pioneers of fully automated self-storage facilities in Canada, we learned this the hard way. When we first embarked on our journey, the options for smart lock systems were limited, and like many early adopters, we turned to the biggest name in the industry. However, what we encountered was far from what we expected.
Over four years of operation, we faced ongoing challenges with the existing technology. Hardware failures were alarmingly frequent, with roughly 10% of the units malfunctioning. To make matters worse, battery and connectivity issues arose without warning, leading to customer frustration and tarnishing our reputation. It became clear that a system with such a high failure rate could not be relied upon for truly remote operations.
Determined to find a solution, we explored other options, but nothing met our expectations. That’s when we took matters into our own hands. We reached out to trusted friends in the oil and gas industry—experts in industrial automation who had developed some of the most advanced and dependable equipment in their field.
